Default Where to start...

Hello guys, I'm currently an undergraduate student and have decided to go into Graphic Design. The only problem is that I won't be able to take the courses until a year and a half later because I have to get these core classes out of the way. I want to be able to get started in Graphic Design as soon as possible so is there anything that you guys would recommend that I do now? I'm new to all of this and have been looking up what the major would entail and jobs for my future. I just need somewhere to start!

If you're talking about 3D animation, if you have the money go for Maya of 3DS. Maya is probably a bit more widely used for television and games but 3DS is still right up there. Both are owned by Autodesk now unfortunately.

Alternatively you could try Bryce3D or Blender3D. I know Blender is free but it's interface is CONFUSING. You'll have to spend a lot of time in their tutorials to figure out what's going on. Bryce might cost a bit but if it does it'll be cheap in comparison to the thousands that 3D Studio and Maya cost.

If you're talking about graphic design for the web and print media then you'd be looking at Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, Flash - there are tutorials all over youtube and the web to help you get started with those. Try getting a student copy of the software. Really google and youtube are the best starting points to learn anything these days.
