| | Web Hosting from Your Home Several things are needed to start web hosting from your home. Technically, you must acquire or build a computer that can be used as a server. You can install any good operating system and server application to make the process smooth. You will definitely need an Internet connection to start the business of web hosting. The cost of high speed Internet connection may often become an obstacle.
To establish yourself as a true web host, you need a fixed internet protocol (IP) address an address which never changes. This IP address must be local. You must also need a router to start web hosting business from your home. The main advantage is that for each component, you do not need a separate unit. | Sponsored Ads | | Member | | Join Date: LongTime Posts: 1100 | | New Sponsored Ads This message will go away once you are registered. | | Be wary when you do this kind of stuff. If you try to do this off a normal isp without paying for a business connection you'll have a few issues. One - your ip address is "semi-dedicated" and will likely change twice a year, maybe more if you leave your router off for too long (days). You'll have to update your dns server with your new ip and it will take up to 2 days to propagate to other dns servers on the net.
Another is that unless you're getting fibre to your door your upload speed is probably very limited - 1-2Mbits. You'll have trouble surfing the web/uploading data and running a server off the same connection. Best to have two connections, one for the server, unless you have 5-20Mbits upload speed.
The next problem you will face is hackers. Good luck keeping your server and all your related software and OS up to date with the latest patches - that's almost a full time job right there. You don't do that and you will find your server hacked - probably find it hosting illegal material that you didn't put there or find your server being used to attack other servers.
It can be done but it's not for the faint of heart.

| | Hi
What you now need to do is think security. If you are using a mainstream distribution then you will be able to check for updates to your operating system online. For example Suse has "Suse you" and Redhat had "online update" both of these systems are designed to keep your operating system and related software up to date. This is very important from a security point of view because the updates will contain security patches and bug fixes. Ensure you keep your system as up to date as possible. No system will ever be 100% secure but you need to be prepared to keep on top of updates and security fixes.
I also find it is very useful to follow news groups and forums very carefully. Very often that can be great for giving you a "heads up" on potential threats.
You need to also pay very close attention to your router. The router also has software that is usually updated periodically. from a security and reliability point of view it is important to ensure you use an up to date version of their firmware. The router is the first point of contact between your network and the internet. You need this part of the system very up to date. when you are sure your server and your router are up to date you can now begin the process of opening up your server to the internet.
At this stage I recommend you pause and have a proper read through your router handbook. I cant offer any advice relating to any specific router. All I can do is explain the procedure and you will need to work this out based on your own equipment.
Thanks |

| | Web Hosting from Your Home Why pay someone else to host your website for you when you can easily do it yourself on the home computer over a broadband Internet connection?

| | Hello
That's where a DDNS service/provider comes in. A DDNS is defined by Webopedia as a method of keeping a domain name linked to a changing or dynamic IP address.
A DDNS service is, therefore, a company that allows users anywhere on the Internet to find your website(s) despite a constantly changing IP address. For a small fee, it allows those who connect to the Internet using dynamic IP addresses to be able to use applications that require a static IP address1 by mapping a third-level domain name to an IP address that you choose, including dynip.com, dyndns.org, and dns2go.com. Your remote computers can then forward a new IP address to the DDNS whenever your ISP-assigned IP address changes.
This is what happens:
People type in your domain name on their browsers
The Internet connection finds a DNS
The DNS looks up your domain name in its database and
Request is forwarded to the proper IP address
yours if you have a static IP or
someone else's static IP (in this case the DDNS provider's) if you have a dynamic IP
DDNS service then forwards the page request to your current IP
Your PC receives the request
Your web server sends back the page to the client PC and browser
The DDNS server system can not only accommodate multiple host names for a single website, it also supports MX (mail exchange) records. The destination address of an MX record must however be a domain name and not simply an IP address.
