CSS vs. Tables: What's the Benefit?

what is the advantages of CSS? It seems like it's less browser-capatible and has the potential to overlap. Plus, it's a whole lot harder to code. With tables, it's easier, it supported, and the worst that can happen is you have to scroll sideways, but at least nothing gets hidden. Why even bother with CSS?
